WHEREAS:
Building community support and understanding for the union's position is an important responsibility undertaken by AFSCME leaders; and
WHEREAS:
The critical role of the media in shaping popular opinion on many issues of importance to AFSCME is increasingly understood; and
WHEREAS:
AFSCME leaders are increasingly called upon to be interviewed by newspaper, radio, and television media representatives; and
WHEREAS:
Well-trained and articulate AFSCME leaders can more effectively communicate and therefore create a more favorable impression for the public.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That the International Union continue to develop training programs designed to assist AFSCME leaders to acquire the skills necessary to communicate effectively with the media; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That AFSCME affiliates encourage those in leadership positions to take part in such training programs.
