WHEREAS:
Public employees and their unions are frequently viewed by the public in a fashion that negatively reflects on their reputation and image; and
WHEREAS:
This negative perception may influence the political direction and decisions of legislators, media representatives and anti-government forces to attack those who provide important public services; and
WHEREAS:
It is important that we, as AFSCME members, utilize every opportunity to strengthen our position in the political arena and at the bargaining table by projecting a positive image in the community and developing a comprehensive community relations program; and
WHEREAS:
Many opportunities exist for involvement in community activities and for the development of relationships with community organizations and groups to improve public understanding and support for public employees and their unions; and
WHEREAS:
Participation in community activities will serve to educate the public, generate support and foster an appreciation for the work performed by public employees at their worksites and in their communities.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That this 29th International Convention urges AFSCME locals and councils to implement programs to improve the public's perception of our member and unions to accurately reflect their many positive contributions; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That AFSCME provide counseling and training services to locals and councils to establish community action committees for the purpose of making the public aware of the many contributions of public employees to their communities both on and off the job; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:
That AFSCME encourage all locals and councils to participate in community action programs which will have an effect on our communities and help build community support.
