Keeping Our Issues Front and Center

By Elissa McBride ·

Spring is a busy season for state and local legislative bodies. That means it is also a busy time for AFSCME activists and leaders who want to keep our issues front and center and hold elected officials accountable.

State and local legislative bodies across the country are convening to set their annual budgets and priorities. Whether it is the city council, county board, school board, state legislature or the U.S. House of Representatives, AFSCME members are fighting for public services and workers’ rights by lobbying, calling, writing and sharing their stories with their legislators.

You can join thousands of AFSCME members who are flexing their political muscle. Contact your staff representative to find out how you can get active in your council and local union legislative campaigns. And sign up for AFSCME’s action alerts.

To support your work, there is a brand-new Union 411 installment that explores the importance of legislative action and how to take part in our union’s ongoing legislative advocacy. You can share it with fellow AFSCME members who are new to our union and use it to help your co-workers understand how to deliver legislative victories for workers.

For more information, follow the Union 411 series, which explains union basics and how to build strong local unions. Each video highlights a specific topic like the power of voting, the role of stewards and collective bargaining.

I wish you good luck and great success in speaking up and standing up through local legislative action this year!
